Hair Breakage

Cuticle Damage

The hair is made up of mostly Keratin, a high sulphur protein, and the amino acid Cystine.

Most of the hairs strength comes from the disulphide bonds, strong chemical bonds between sulphur atoms.

While the body of the hair, is fibrous, the outer protective covering of the hair is a stronger keratin called Matrix protein.

This shows a cuticle after being damaged by such things as sunlight, heat, brushing, chemical processing.  This breaks some of the strong disulphide bonds, weakening the cortex of the hair.  This leaves the hair rough and prone to breakage.
